Website or webshop? When do you choose what?

Do you want a website or do you want an online store? That is the question that many entrepreneurs ask themselves. In this blog article we explain when to choose a website and when to opt for a webshop.

Two types: website vs webshop

In the field of e-commerce there are two main types of websites: the website and the webshop. So when do you choose which one for your company?

Website

A website is a digital representation of the company or organization. It may contain information about who you are, what you do, and how to contact you. For example, if you want to create an online presence with content such as blog posts, videos, and images, then a website is suitable. Websites are also great for creating a portfolio.

Online shop / online store

A webshop, on the other hand, is an online store where customers can buy products or services from you. Online stores are great for selling both physical goods and digital goods such as software and downloadable content. They also come with numerous features such as payment processing, inventory management, ordering and shipping systems

The big difference is whether you can pay or not.

Now that we know the basics, here are four factors to consider when choosing between a website and an online store:

1. Purpose of the website

The purpose of your site will help determine whether a website or an online store is the right choice. If the purpose is to provide information about the company or organization, then a website is perfect.

However, if you want to sell products or services online, a webshop is necessary. To avoid having to start over, take the time to research the different options available and make an informed decision about which platform is best for your business needs.

Keep in mind that even if your primary goal is not to sell products online, having an online store as an additional sales channel can be beneficial; it allows customers to buy what they need without leaving your site.

2. Target group

Who is your target group? If it is mainly local customers who prefer to buy in person, then a physical store with a website as a business card (which attracts people to the physical store) is often more useful than an online store. But if most of your potential customers are located elsewhere or are comfortable buying online, then an online store is the better option.

3. Features

What features does your ideal e-commerce platform offer? Are you looking for something that is easy to use and set up? Or do you need more complex functionality, such as integration of accounting software or customer loyalty programs? The answer will determine whether a particular online store is better suited to your needs.

4. Budget

How much money do you want (or can) spend on setting up and managing an e-commerce site? Websites typically require less maintenance and have lower setup costs than online stores, so if budgets are tight, starting with just a website is advisable.
